Second Annual Ron Clark Academy
Model UN Conference a Success!
With a bang of the gavel by Secretary-General Graham
Sweeney, the Second Annual Ron
Clark Academy Model United Nations Conference (RCAMUN) was called to
order. On March 2, 2013, over 150
students from eleven schools and coming from five states assembled at the Georgia Tech Research
Institute in Atlanta, Georgia to discuss and debate pressing world issues
such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, access to medication, rights of
indigenous people, child protection against violence, and maritime safety. This authentic simulation of the UN provides
a highly professional setting in which to collaborate with peers.
A mix of first time and experienced delegates allowed
newcomers to quickly learn the ropes of MUN and engage in high levels of debate
and discussion. The dais, comprised of
Georgia Tech and Emory University Model United Nations members, led delegates
through a full day of examining issues and coming up with resolutions to
address these topics. Delegates were
forced to think at high levels in order to understand and argue these complex
matters that affect people around the world.
Freedom Middle School student, Taylor Lathem, stated that at the core of
all of these issues, “Humanity must be the first choice.”
RCAMUN Co-Director Adam Dovico stated, “Model United Nations
allows students to come together, ask questions, and discuss subject matter
that is deep, relevant, and interesting.
With Common Core in our schools now, Model UN ties in perfectly to what
the initiative is looking to do – dig for depth of knowledge through
questioning and debate.” Following closing ceremonies, delegates were able to return
to normal teenagers and enjoy each other’s company with music and pizza.
RCAMUN functions as part of the United Nations Association of the United States of America’s Global Classroom® program.
